Each piece of handcraft is the result of three basic choices: the raw material, the working technique and the reference models. The choices made determine into which specific category the product shall be classified.

Due to the enormous differences within the craft sector, categories have been drawn up according to whether the products are made using traditional materials or if they are made largely by machine.

The categories are defined by R.L. n. 02/2003 “Safeguarding and valorising traditional handicraft from Valle d’Aosta.”
